It can be confusing to understand the difference between N95 and KN95 masks since their names are so similar. Are KN95 masks and N95 masks the same or are they different?
Basically, N95 masks meet the US standards for respirator masks while KN95 masks are the Chinese standards for masks. These requirements are what the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health requires manufacturers to meet in order to label their masks as N95.
The information on the right is the technical specifications for different masks. In most categories you can see that N95 and KN95 masks are similar with minimal differences.
Here are some basic differences to understand:
N95 masks are regulated by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) which verifies that these masks meet the proper criteria to filter at least 95% of the incoming air in a mask.
KN95 masks are regulated by the Chinese government who verify that the masks made there meet the proper safety guidelines and filter at least 95% of the incoming air.
Due to the global pandemic crisis, KN95 and N95 masks became very scarce (as well as masks regulated by other countries world wide). Because of this shortage, many KN95 masks have been sold more frequently in the US and other locations globally. NIOSH has openly stated that the KN95 masks do indeed protect American workers similarly to the N95 masks they regulate.
